Surround yourself in silence

"Looking for the one who hides in the dark." Saint Gregory of Nyssa
"The silence will be the glory of the coming age." Saint Isaac Sirul

The Holy Fathers of the Wilderness consider this theology of silence and UNKNOWING so important to them that they place it as the culminations of the spiritual experience. Yet the path of silence, so important in the mystical experience of the Orthodox Church, produced only a few works. We certainly find here and there, in the thinking of the Holy Fathers, pages in connection with it, but virtually very few books treat the theme itself, while it represents the main framework of their spiritual life. The word of St. Seraphim of Sarov addressed to a young monk: "Surround yourself in silence" found less echo among his disciples than necessary "the acquisition of the Holy Spirit" which the saint spoke with as great ardour. One stems from the other in such a way that we might say as well: "Acquire the Holy Spirit and know the Silence," and "acquire silence, and receive the spirit," or "If you are in silence, then you are in the Holy Spirit."
(Fragment of the path of silence according to the tradition of the holy parents of the wilderness, Michel Laroche, disciple of the Father Cleopa)
